Air India group made an announcement that there will be a phase-wise expansion of a fuel surcharge on the domestic and international routes. The stand has been taken for sudden surge in fuel prices due to war in West Asia and fast changing geopolitics across the Gulf.

The aviation turbine fuel (ATF) responsible for nearly 40% of an airline’s operating costs has seen an increase following interruptions in the supply chains. And specifically in India, the burden is further augmented by high Excise Duty and VAT on ATF in key metro cities viz-a-viz Delhi and Mumbai, and this has put phenomenal strain on the airline’s operations and overall ability.

The fresh fuel surcharges are being applied in three phases, and would be implemented on scheduled flights, together on those operated by Air India Express1.

Phase 3 shall become applicable on the air routes to and from Far East markets, namely Hong Kong, Japan, and South Korea, which will be announced in due course.

Air India's decision to increase fuel surcharge, would levy the cost on passengers and as the result they will need to pay higher ticket prices. There is also an increasing likelihood that other airlines may go ahead with the idea of increasing fuel surcharges in alignment to balance the disruptions arising out of the West Asia disturbances.

Regrettable Move that Concerns Air India’s Management

Air India has voiced its concern over the sudden and abrupt increase in the fuel surcharges but weighed them on the reasons that were far beyond their control and willingness. If the new fuel surcharges are not implemented, then the operating cost of airlines would touch a new high, which will lead to cancellation of the flights.

The management of Air India group has voiced that it is taking a closer view of the current situation, and as the situation in West Asia and Gulf region mellows down, there are chances of making significant readjustments with respect to fuel surcharges. Until this happens, the passengers have to bear the brunt of the increased fuel surcharges.

Additional Impact on Travelers and the Aviation Industry

The decision to introduce the new fuel surcharge is expected to have a direct impact on travelers who are planning domestic as well as international journeys in the coming months. Passengers booking flights after the announced dates may notice a slight increase in the final ticket price due to the revised surcharge component. Travel experts believe that such surcharges are commonly implemented when fuel costs rise sharply, as airlines attempt to maintain operational stability while continuing to operate long-haul and regional routes.

Industry observers also note that the aviation sector has been facing multiple challenges over the past few years, including rising fuel prices, geopolitical uncertainties, and disruptions in global supply chains. As a result, airlines across the world periodically revise their fare structures and additional charges in order to balance operational costs while continuing to provide services to passengers.

Travelers planning upcoming trips are advised to monitor airfare updates and check airline announcements before booking their tickets. Early booking and comparing fares across different travel platforms may help passengers manage the impact of these new surcharges and secure better travel deals.
