It has been quite a time since two historic rivals India and Pakistan have shared the cricket field, and set the heat on for the ICC T20 World Cup cricket lovers. The ICC Men's T20 World Cup, formerly the ICC World Twenty20, is essentially one of the popular biennial world cups in the field of cricket where 20 global teams come together to vie for the coveted title.
The year 2026 T20 World Cup will have two hosts India and Sri Lanka. The significance here is that India and Sri Lanka have become direct qualifier teams for the world cup, while Afghanistan, Australia, South Africa, England, West Indies, USA and Bangladesh have made entry through the super eight stage. The remaining three direct qualification spots are selected on the basis of T20I team rankings, and these include the teams from New Zealand, Pakistan and Ireland respectively.
The 20 participating teams are divided into four groups of five teams each. The teams will play against each other once and the top two sides from each group ultimately balance out on the Super Eight stage, where two groups of four teams would confront each other. In the end, the top two teams from these groups will vie for semi-finals.
Group A: India (X1), Namibia, Netherlands, Pakistan (Y3), USA
Group B: Australia (X2), Ireland, Oman, Sri Lanka (Y4), Zimbabwe
Group C: England (Y1), Italy, Nepal, Scotland, West Indies (X3)
Group D: Afghanistan, Canada, New Zealand (Y2), South Africa (X4), United Arab Emirates
India and Pakistan teams will be standing against each other at R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on February 15 (Sunday), and of course the world will be eyeing on the batting order and the game play. Game strategies are already on the anvil, with players from both sides planning to portray their efforts and win the T 20 World cup.
There are 20 teams in the T20 World Cup again, after the tournament expanded in 2024. Hosts India and Sri Lanka earned direct qualification while seven other teams, which made the Super Eight stage of the 2024 edition, also gained automatic qualification - Afghanistan, Australia, South Africa, England, West Indies, USA and Bangladesh. The remaining three direct qualification spots were chosen based on the T20I team rankings - New Zealand, Pakistan and Ireland.
Italy and Netherlands have gained entry through the European qualifier, whereas Canada entered through the Americas qualifier. Nepal, Oman and UAE made entry through the Asia qualifier; Namibia and Zimbabwe are the two qualifying teams from Africa region. Italy will be making their T20 World Cup debut this year.
The World Cup will be played across eight venues: the MA Chidambaram Stadium (Chennai), Arun Jaitley Stadium (New Delhi), Wankhede Stadium (Mumbai), Eden Gardens (Kolkata), Narendra Modi Stadium (Ahmedabad), R. Premadasa Stadium (Colombo), Sinhalese Sports Club Cricket Ground (Colombo) and Pallekele International Cricket Stadium (Kandy).
