The Union Budget for 2026–27 presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has hit a balanced chord in India's commercial airlines ecosystem, boosting an ultimate confidence in the times of global economic turbulence.
The Regional Connectivity Scheme – Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik (UDAN), which was envisaged in the year 2017 as a concerted market-driven template will make commercial air transportation in India not only affordable, but would give a boost to the underserved and unserved areas.
UDAN basically focuses on bidding of the domestic airlines for regional air routes in India propelled through the Viability Gap Funding (VGF) and cost subsidies likely to receive from center states, besides the airport operators. The start will boost India’s regional airlines economy and yield good results, as foreign tourists are likely to get the benefit of flying anywhere by focusing on safe air journeys.
Since 2017–18, there were allocation of 923 regional routes out of which only 657 are presently under operation. The air routes have linked to 93 unserved and underserved airports, which also comprises 15 heliports as well as two water aerodromes — transporting a whopping 1.6 crore domestic passengers on more than 3.27 lakh UDAN flights.
Under the new modified UDAN scheme, which is under the approval stage, there is a likelihood of addition of 120 new regional destinations which would help in transferring 4 crore air bound passengers in the timeframe of a decade. The scheme will allow expansion of connectivity across India through helipads and single strip airports, specifically in the hills and the North-Eastern districts.
The Union Budget for 2026–27 is expected to significantly reshape domestic travel patterns by making air journeys more accessible for middle-income travelers, first-time flyers, and tourists exploring offbeat destinations. Enhanced regional connectivity will reduce travel time between cities that earlier depended on long road or rail journeys, encouraging short-haul leisure travel and weekend tourism. With improved frequency on regional routes, travelers will be able to plan flexible itineraries, supporting growth in cultural tourism, pilgrimage circuits, eco-tourism, and heritage destinations spread across India.
Improved regional air connectivity is also poised to benefit international travelers arriving in India, allowing seamless multi-city travel beyond major metro hubs. Tourists landing at international gateways will gain easier access to smaller cities, hill regions, coastal destinations, and culturally significant towns through well-connected domestic air routes. This enhanced mobility is expected to boost inbound tourism, promote lesser-known destinations, and strengthen India’s position as a diverse, well-connected global travel destination while improving overall travel convenience and safety.
